How Salary Survey Midpoints Can Be Misleading, and What You Can Do About It

The midpoints in surveys reflect the national averages and medians for each position. To customize the survey data for your local market, you have to multiply the local variances – listed below and technically called geographic wage differentials if you want to impress your boss – by the national salary midpoint for a specific non exempt, exempt or executive position to determine the correct midpoint in your market. The maximum of the range is typically 120% of the midpoint. The minimum of the range is typically 80% of the midpoint.
